
Walt McKechnie was with the New York Rangers for a very short period of time and only on paper. The Rangers claimed him from the California Golden Seals in June, 1974 but he was immediately traded to the Boston Bruins for Derek Sanderson.
A prospect of the Toronto Maple Leafs, McKechnie’s NHL career started with the Minnesota North Stars in 1967-68. He also played for the California Golden Seals, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals, Cleveland Barons, Toronto Maple Leafs (rejoining the club in 1978-79) and the Colorado Rockies.
He played just 53 games for the Bruins in 1974-75 before being traded to the Red Wings. He started the 1977-78 campaign with the Capitals but was traded to Cleveland after 16 games. He had two separate stints with the Red Wings, from 1974-75 to 1976-77 and from 1981-82 to 1982-83.
Between 1967-68 and 1982-83, McKechnie played 955 regular season and 15 playoff games in the National Hockey League. He surpassed the 20 goal plateau four times, twice with the Wings along with once each with the Golden Seals and Maple Leafs. His career best 26 goals was scored with Detroit in 1975-76.
