Bernie Nicholls went into the final game of the 1984-85 NHL season with 98 points. That game was played on April 6, 1985 against the Vancouver Canucks at the L.A. Forum. Nicholls reached the plateau with a pair of assists.
The first point came late in the first period on a goal by Anders Hakansson. The second came on a third period marker by Brian MacLellan. Bernie didn’t record a goal but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Nicholls was responsible for ten of the 44 shots put toward Vancouver goalie Frank Caprice in the 4-4 tie.
Nicholls would surpass the 100 point plateau once more during his NHL career and he did it in a big way. In 1988-89, he totaled 150 points and is one of just eight players in NHL history to record 70 or more goals in a single season.
Between 1981-82 and 1998-99, Bernie Nicholls played 1,127 regular season and 118 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks. Originally, he was a fourth round pick by the Kings at the 1980 NHL Entry Draft.
