
On February 25, 1990, Sergei Makarov had seven points on two goals and five assists in a game against the Edmonton Oilers. His performance helped the Flames to 10-4 win over their Alberta rivals at the Saddledome.
Sergei started the scoring in this match with his 19th of the 1989-90 NHL season at 4:57 of the first period, assisted by Al MacInnis and Gary Roberts. In the second, Makarov assisted on goals by Paul Ranheim and Joe Nieuwendyk.
It was a four point third period, scoring his 20th of the year and assisting on two goals by Gary Roberts and one more by Nieuwendyk. Gary Suter also had five assists in the match for Calgary while Roberts had four points on two goals and two assists.
This was his first season in the NHL and his most productive, totaling 86 points on 24 goals and 62 assists. Despite playing eleven years of elite level hockey with CSKA Moscow, Makarov was still deemed a rookie and won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
