Tommy and Butch Williams: 1st U.S. Born Brothers To Play In The NHL

The Williams brothers were born in Duluth, Minnesota, Tom in 1940 and Butch in 1952. Tommy was a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic gold medal winning team, dubbed “The Forgotten Miracle”, before going pro in the Boston Bruins organization.

Tommy played 663 regular season and 10 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1961-62 and 1975-76 with the Bruins, Minnesota North Stars, California Golden Seals and Washington Capitals. He played two years in the WHA, 1972-73 and 1973-74, with the New England Whalers.

Butch made his way to the NHL via Canadian major junior, playing for the Oshawa Generals and Niagara Falls Flyers. His time in the NHL was limited to 108 regular season games between 1973-74 and 1975-76 with the St. Louis Blues and California Seals. He also played 29 WHA games with the Edmonton Oilers in 1976-77.
