Marcel Dionne: Junior Standout With The St. Catharines Black Hawks

Marcel Dionne played three years with the St. Catharines Black Hawks from 1968-69 to 1970-71 before jumping to the NHL in 1971-72 with the Detroit Red Wings. In each season with St. Catharines, he totaled at least 100 points.

In his rookie season, Dionne led the team with exactly 100 points. This total placed him second in the league behind just Rejean Houle of the Montreal Junior Canadiens. Just a point behind Marcel was Darryl Sittler of the London Knights.

His second season, 1969-70, saw the numbers improve to 55 goals and 77 assists for 132 points over 54 games. Dionne led the league, earning the Eddie Powers Trophy with runner-up Gilbert Perreault eleven points behind. Both Marcel’s 55 goals and 77 assists also led the league.

In his final season, he again earned the Eddie Powers Trophy as the league’s top scorer. The numbers increased to 62 goals and 81 assists for 143 points over just 46 games. In points, he was six ahead of runner-up Dave Gardner of the Toronto Marlboros. Dionne’s 62 goals placed him just third in the league behind Rick Martin and Steve Shutt.
