Joe Nieuwendyk set a few team records on January 11, 1989 in a game at the Calgary Saddledome against the Winnipeg Jets. One of those was the most goals by one player in a single period with 4 scored in the second frame. Another was his five goals total, making him the only player in franchise history to score that many in a game.

In a fight-filled affair that saw 252 penalty minutes handed out between the two teams, now the 27th most in NHL history, Nieuwendyk scored his 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st of the 1988-89 NHL season in the second period, all on Winnipeg goalie Daniel Berthiaume. He had scored his first of the game midway through the first frame.

Joe accounted for 12 of the 36 shots put on net by the Flames. He scored two on the power play, two at even strength and one shorthanded. In the 8-3 Calgary win, Nieuwendyk’s second goal of the game, scored shorthanded, held on as the game winner. He led the NHL that year with 11 GWG, one more than Guy Charbonneau of the Montreal Canadiens.
