On November 7, 1968, Red Berenson of the St. Louis Blues scored six goals in an 8-0 road win over the Philadelphia Flyers. It was the first time a player scored six in a game since Syd Howe of the Detroit Red Wings did it against the New York Rangers in 1944. Darryl Sittler scored six in a game in 1976 and no player has accomplished the feat since.
Berenson had scored just three goals in his first eleven games of the 1968-69 NHL season before exploding in game 12. He would go without a goal over the next four games and finished the season with a career high of 35, placing him in a seventh place tie with Norm Ullman of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In that game against the Flyers, Berenson scored the first five goals of the game, including the only four goals scored in the second period. Number six was scored at 14:04 of the third period, unassisted and the last goal of the game. Red also assisted on a third period goal by Camille Henry for a seven point night.
Red was responsible for ten of the 30 shots put on Philadelphia goalie Doug Favell. Jacques Plante of the Blues turned away all 26 shots for the shutout win.
