On October 16, 1952, the Canadiens hosted the New York Rangers at the Montreal Forum. Bernie Geoffrion was given a penalty shot at 17:39 of the second period and scored his first goal of the 1952-53 NHL season on New York’s Gump Worsley.
After scoreless first period, this was the first goal of the game, giving the Habs a 1-0 lead. In the third, Elmer Lach scored a pair of goals for Montreal before Herb Dickenson broke Gerry McNeil’s shutout attempt. The final score was 3-1 for the Canadiens.
Geoffrion had a thing for playing the Rangers. He recorded 17 hat tricks over his NHL career and seven of them came against New York, including three in the 1960-61 season alone. Of course, later in his career, he made a comeback with the Rangers, playing with the team for the 1966-67 and 1967-68 seasons.
