Danny Gare put the puck past Gilles Gilbert of the Boston Bruins just 18 seconds into his first NHL game. The goal was assisted by Craig Ramsay and Don Luce, giving the Buffalo Sabres an early 1-0 lead at home on October 10, 1974.

In the 9-5 win, Gare also recorded his first NHL assist at 14:10 of the second period on a Ramsay goal that was also assisted by Luce. The rookie put three shots on Gilbert in the game with the Boston goalie facing a total of 40 pucks and allowing nine to get past him.

The historic moment was perhaps overshadowed by the five point performance put in by Buffalo superstar Gilbert Perreault. Gil scored three goals and assisted on two second period markers by Rick Martin. Perreault and Jerry Korab led with six shots each on Gilbert.

Gare went on to score 30 more goals in 1974-75, finishing with 62 points on 31 goals and 31 assists. He added 13 points over 17 playoff games with the Sabres reaching the Stanley Cup final before falling to the Philadelphia Flyers. Danny finished third in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year behind winner Eric Vail and runner-up Pierre Larouche.
