On March 20, 1971, Dave Dryden and the Buffalo Sabres played the Canadiens at the Montreal Forum. Dave started the game for the Sabres but it was Rogie Vachon in net for the Canadiens. Dryden was pulled two minutes into the match after Buffalo coach Punch Imlach saw that brother Ken wasn’t playing for the Habs.
Vachon was injured at the 13:07 mark of the second period and Ken was put in. This caused Imlach to pull Joe Daley and put Dave back in net. He almost immediately allowed the game winning goal by Jacques Lemaire. This was the first time goaltending brothers had faced each other in the NHL.
The game ended in a 5-2 win for the Habs. Ken Dryden faced 21 shots and saved 19. Dave Dryden took on 14 shots and also allowed two goals (Montreal’s 5th goal was an empty-netter). They would play against each other just one more time, a 3-3 tie early in the 1972-73 NHL season.
Ken Dryden played in 397 regular season and 112 playoff games in the NHL between 1970-71 and 1978-79, all with the Montreal Canadiens. Dave Dryden appeared in 203 regular season and three playoff games in the NHL between 1961-62 and 1979-80 with the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers. In the WHA, Dave also played 242 regular season and 18 playoff games between 1974-75 and 1978-79 with the Chicago Cougars and Edmonton Oilers.
