At 8:34 of the third period on December 20, 1983 at the Brendan Byrne Arena, Guy Lafleur put one past New Jersey Devils goalie Glenn Resch for his 500th career regular season goal. The milestone goal was assisted by Pierre Mondou and Bob Gainey, Lafleur’s 14th of the 1983-84 NHL season. It was the final marker of the game and the Habs came out with a 6-0 victory.

It was a two point night for Guy, also assisting on Montreal’s second goal of the game, scored by Pierre Mondou at 1:10 of the second. He had three shots on Resch in the match. Glenn faced 33 while Montreal netminder Richard Sevigny turned away all 20 for the shutout.

It was the same Devils that allowed the 500th goal of Gilbert Perreault’s career a few years later. On March 9, 1986 at the Aud in Buffalo, it was Alain Chevrier in net for the Devils in a 4-3 loss to the Sabres.

Over his NHL career, Lafleur went on to score 560 regular season and 58 playoff goals. Between 1971-72 and 1990-91, Guy played 1,126 regular season and 128 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques.
