On October 27, 1966, Paul Henderson and the Detroit Red Wings hosted the New York Rangers at Detroit Olympia. After going 0-4 to start the 1966-67 NHL season, Henderson took it upon himself to get the Red Wings into the win column.
Bernie Geoffrion of the Rangers scored the lone goal of the first period and assisted on a Don Marshall marker 1:36 into the second to put the visitors up 2-0. At that point, Henderson, along with Norm Ullman, came roaring back.
Less than a minute after the Marshall goal, Henderson set up Ullman for his first goal of the season. 31 seconds after that, Paul scored his fifth of the campaign with help from Norm and Gary Bergman. It was the first goal of a natural hat trick for Henderson, scoring again at 8:55 and 14:50 to put Detroit up 4-2. The third goal remained as the game winner.
Don Marshall ended the second with New York’s third and final goal. It was a buzzer-beater, scored at 19:59, assisted by Rod Gilbert and Phil Goyette. Goyette assisted on all three New York goals.
Henderson concluded the game’s scoring with his fourth of the match and eighth of the season at 12:55 of the third, assisted by Ullman and Floyd Smith. The duo of Henderson and Ullman combined for nine points and were responsible for 13 of the 49 shots put toward Ed Giacomin. The Rangers were able to stop Gordie Howe and Alex Delvecchio, leaving both off the scoresheet.
