Red Wings Shutout Rangers 15-0 In 1944 Game

On January 23, 1944, the Red Wings hosted the New York Rangers at Detroit Olympia and shutout their guests 15-0. After the first period, the score was a respectable 2-0. After two, it was 7-0. The Red Wings did not let off the gas in the third, adding eight. Detroit goalie Connie Dion had to make just nine saves for the blank.

Syd Howe led Detroit with three goals and two assists. Murray Armstrong, Joe Carveth and Don Grosso all have five point games, as well. Four of Howe’s five points came in the third period, including all of his hat trick goals. The final two were scored within eight seconds of each other late in the frame.

The next worst shutout losses occurred in 1971 and 1985, both 13-0 defeats. On January 2, 1971, it was the Red Wings on the losing end of a 13-0 blank. The Maple Leafs took the win with Jacques Plante and Bruce Gamble sharing the shutout. Jim Harrison, Paul Henderson and Norm Ullman all had four point games for the Leafs.

On November 8, 1985, the Edmonton Oilers scored 13 on Frank Caprice and Vancouver Canucks. The team was led offensively by Dave Lumley with a hat trick and two assists. Wayne Gretzky finished the match with four points on four assists.
